No Arms, No Legs, 22 Miles
A Frenchman, Philippe Croizon, who lost most of his arms and legs in a nearly-fatal electrocution accident, is attempting to set an incredible record by swimming across the English Channel. On his arms, he’ll arms flippers attached to his wet suit. On his legs, he’ll be sporting conventional flippers that are attached to the bases of a prosthesis.
He was first inspired to swim the channel while watching a documentary in his hospital bed. Nicknamed ‘Iron Man,’ the 42-year old has been training vigorously. He swims nearly 30 hours a week and has kept up this regiment for the past two years. He has also been going to the gym to build his body strength. He has been doing most of his recent training in the sea, so he can get used to the tidal flow and the water temperature.
When he sets out to complete his task in September, he’ll have a team accompanying him, along with a trained medical staff. He hopes to span the 22 mile channel in 24 hours.
