Feature Writer Alena Roberts – Celebrating Our Amazing Service Dogs
I have been a guide dog user for 10 years and I can honestly say that both of my guide’s have given me more independence than I could ever dream of. This week, I’m embarking on a new adventure as I go for my third guide.
September is National Service Dog month, and PetCo and Natural Balance Dog Food have teamed up to raise money for Guide Dogs for the Blind and military service animals.
For the first time, Congress will be dedicating a national monument to a dog. The monument, which will be in San Antonio, will feature a combat dog and his handler. Not many people realize that many dogs have served in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Currently these dogs are treated more as equipment rather than service members, but there is a bill in Congress to change this.
Until September 22nd, donations can be made at PetCo stores or on their website that will help fund organizations that provide service animals to people with disabilities. In addition, all proceeds from the sale of 12 Ounce Natural Balance Jerky Bar Treats will go towards the monument in San Antonio.
In closing, here’s a little poem about my soon to be retired guide Midge.
M is for making me laugh
I is for your amazing initiative and spirit
D is for your determination to get us to our destination
G is for getting people to give you belly rubs
E is for enhancing my independence and strength as a person
For all of you that have experienced the joy of having a service dog, give yours a hug for me, and feel free to share stories about you and your guide in the Reader’s Forum.
